250th Anniversary Coins: A Collector’s Guide to the 2026 Semiquincentennial

The year 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most significant in modern American numismatics. To mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Mint has launched a sweeping semiquincentennial coin program featuring one-year-only designs on circulating coinage, special privy marks on flagship bullion series, and a new Best of the Mint gold and silver set. Here is what collectors need to know.

New Circulating Coin Designs for 2026

For the first time in decades, the U.S. Mint has redesigned several circulating denominations for one year only. All new coins carry the dual date 1776-2026, echoing the format used on the beloved bicentennial coinage of 1976.

For collectors who want to mark the semiquincentennial with a keepsake of their own, the Danbury Mint’s America’s 250th Anniversary collection offers commemorative coins, silver bullion, and patriotic collectibles created for this historic milestone.

The Emerging Liberty Dime replaces the Roosevelt design that had been in use for 80 years. The obverse features a determined Liberty with a stars-and-stripes liberty cap, while the reverse depicts an eagle in flight carrying arrows with the inscription "Liberty Over Tyranny."

Five semiquincentennial quarter designs are being released throughout the year, each tied to a defining chapter in American history: the Mayflower Compact, the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Gettysburg Address.

The Enduring Liberty Half Dollar marks the first design change for that denomination since the 1976 bicentennial. The obverse shows Liberty passing her torch to a new generation, with the inscription "Knowledge Is the Only Guardian of True Liberty."

The cent and nickel retain their current designs but carry the 1776-2026 dual date. The cent is no longer struck for circulation as of 2025, so the 2026 penny is available only in collector sets.

Bullion and Numismatic Releases

Several established U.S. Mint series feature special semiquincentennial elements in 2026. The American Silver Eagle, American Gold Eagle, American Buffalo gold coin, and Morgan and Peace silver dollars all bear the 1776-2026 dual date and a Liberty Bell privy mark inscribed with the number 250. The Charters of Freedom Platinum Proof Coin series launches in 2026 with a coin honoring the Declaration of Independence, followed by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights in subsequent years.

The Best of the Mint series pairs 24-karat gold coins reproducing classic historic designs with companion one-ounce silver medals featuring modern reinterpretations. The historic coins honored include the 1916 Mercury Dime, the Standing Liberty Quarter, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, the 1907 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, and the 1804 Dollar.

Where to Find 2026 Semiquincentennial Coins

The redesigned dimes, quarters, and half dollars are being struck for general circulation, so you may find them in everyday pocket change as the year progresses. Banks can request the new coins, though availability varies by region and timing.

For collectors seeking uncirculated or proof specimens, the U.S. Mint sells rolls, bags, proof sets, and individual numismatic coins directly through usmint.gov. Many products are released on a schedule throughout the year, with some selling out quickly.
