The Complete 20th Century Half Dollar Treasury Collection
A Collector’s Look at America’s Classic Half Dollars
The half dollar was once one of America’s most significant coins. Large, impressive, and often struck in silver, it played an important role in everyday commerce throughout much of the 20th century. By the 1960s, however, half dollars began to disappear from pockets, purses, cash registers, and daily use. By the end of the century, they had become far less common in circulation.
For collectors, the half dollar never lost its appeal. From the classic Barber Half Dollar to the beloved Walking Liberty design, the Franklin Half Dollar, and the Kennedy Half Dollar, this denomination tells a rich story of American history, artistry, and coinage.
The Complete 20th Century Half Dollar Treasury brings that story together in one remarkable collection. Available exclusively from the Danbury Mint, this year-by-year collection includes one United States half dollar from each year of issue in the 20th century, presented in a handsome wooden display chest.
A Century of American Half Dollars
The collection spans four major half dollar designs, each representing a different era in American coinage.
Barber Half Dollar
The Barber silver half dollar was minted from 1901 to 1915. Named after its designer, U.S. Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber, the coin features a portrait of Liberty on the obverse and the Great Seal of the United States on the reverse. These early 20th century coins offer collectors a connection to the final years of America’s classic turn-of-the-century coinage.
Walking Liberty Half Dollar
Minted from 1916 to 1947, the Walking Liberty silver half dollar is widely admired as one of America’s most beautiful coin designs. It circulated during an eventful period that included World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II. Its graceful image of Liberty striding forward has made it a favorite among generations of collectors.
Franklin Half Dollar
The Franklin silver half dollar was minted from 1948 to 1963. It was the first circulating U.S. coin to feature a person from American history other than a president. Benjamin Franklin appears on the obverse, while the Liberty Bell is shown on the reverse. This design reflects both American ingenuity and the nation’s founding ideals.
Kennedy Half Dollar
The Kennedy half dollar was first issued in 1964, shortly after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The 1964 Kennedy half dollar was also the last circulating U.S. coin made in 90% silver. The design was approved by Jacqueline Kennedy and continued through the remainder of the 20th century.
Nearly Two Full Troy Pounds of Silver
One of the most notable features of The Complete 20th Century Half Dollar Treasury is its silver content. The collection includes every silver issue half dollar from the 20th century and contains nearly two full troy pounds of silver in all.
Many of these coins are more than 100 years old and have been out of circulation for generations. Highlights include low-mintage and historically significant coins such as the 1921 Walking Liberty Half Dollar, the 1955 Franklin Half Dollar, and the 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar first-year issue.
Collector Highlight: The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar was the last circulating U.S. coin made in 90% silver.
