Historic coins minted more than 150 years ago showcased in a deluxe wooden display chest.
During the Civil War, silver coins such as the Half Dime were widely hoarded for their precious metal content, resulting in a shortage of small denomination coins…and creating a national coinage crisis. To solve this problem, the United States introduced the first five-cent Nickel in 1866.
Known as the Shield Nickel, this classic coin was quickly accepted by the American public. But the coins were struck in such small quantities and most became so worn and damaged in circulation that few remain for today’s collectors.
But now, the Danbury Mint is pleased to announce an extraordinary new set that brings together both spectacular varieties of the first-ever U.S. Nickel, including the original-design coin that was made for less than a year over 150 years ago. Presenting…U.S. Shield Nickel Set, available exclusively from the Danbury Mint and presented in a striking display case at no additional charge.
